The customer had a leak in the upstairs of their home. They did know at the time what was causing the leak. This leak had been a problem for a while for these people. They had had several different roofers try to fix it but the problem was that they were looking in the wrong place.
There is a pvc pipe boot close to the bottom left of the chimney that everybody thought was the problem, so it was viewed as the culprit and tarred accordingly. The water was actually coming in through the top and side of the chimney and the damage appeared beside the pipe. They needed a flashing repair in Peachtree City, and we were able to recognize the actual problem.
We bid to reflash with step flashing and a new top saddle on the chimney to shed water away from the chimney instead of into it. The step flashing replaces the old trough flashing, which was causing the problem.
Here is the method by which we completed this flashing repair in 30269. We installed the step flashing first up the side of the chimney, tucking the flashing under the existing siding and weaving between each individual shingle. We then installed the top chimney saddle to the top of the chimney and sealed it to the top corner step flashing to allow the water to flow around the corner and down the side of the chimney instead of under the shingles and into the attic.
The job turned out very well. The customer was very satisfied, and extremely happy that we were finally able to fix the problem that other roofing companies could not recognize. The roof was very steep, so it took us a bit longer than we had expected to complete, but nevertheless we finished it and obtained the desired results!
